I wrote this song in the middle of December after the funeral of my dear friend Claire Grove. It speaks for itself but I’m glad I’ve written it. It’s definitely a song of celebration of the dark days of winter and what good days they can be. How lucky we are to have every moment – but it often doesn’t feel that way.
Why are there “some onions, some carrots”? My late husband said this in the mid 90s. I had a new computer and I recorded him on it discussing what to make for lunch. An ordinary day, and a extraordinarily special memory.
Lyrics
Ordinary day, I put the kettle on
It’s raining outside, I close the blinds
Ordinary day, I make up my mind
I change my mind
I’m on a diet for a change, ignoring hunger pains
I had three cold calls and that’s all,
I’m a little bit bored
I’m loving today, I’m living today for you
For all of you, robbed of ordinary days
It’s as good as it’s gets, it’s a precious as it gets
Wonderful ordinary day
There’s some onions, some carrots, I might make soup
I shall feast, I shall celebrate
The ordinary days we shared, and the ordinary days stolen
Ordinary day, you can go away,
But please come back day after day after day
