This is a song I wrote towards the end of 2013 for a new piece I’m working on. It’s an experiential immersive theatre piece about porn addiction. It’s called Prurience. I developed it at the National Theatre Studio. This song is written by one of the characters who is trying to express how he feels about being addicted to porn and what he really wants.
I’d prefer to be posting these videos as sound only demos. I’m not a particularly visual person, but YouTube works best with vision as well. I hope the fixed shot of me doesn’t put you off enjoying the song. You can always use a little download like YouTube to MP3 to make a version you can just listen to whenever you want. I’d be very flattered by that.

Lyrics:
I live in poverty, inflicted by me
I can touch, and taste and feel
But I insist on poverty, I live indirectly
I hear my soul scream but I watch the screen
One real touch is worth more than these hours of seeing too much
Can I value real touch
So I live in my riches, not the hectic pleasures
That empty me, then fill me back up with empty
I’ll always get hungry, it’s bigger than me
I crave, I am it’s slave
But hunger is eating me, I don’t recognise me
It would be tragic, if I wasn’t on automatic
One real touch is worth more than these hours of seeing too much
Can I value real touch
So I celebrate the actual, it’s retinal not factual
It stimulates, and simulates badly, the thing I used to love
Should they diagnose it or is it just a habit?
Does the genii have the bottle — it’s never big on being subtle
One real touch is worth more than these hours of seeing too much
Can I value real touch
So I live in my riches, not the hectic pleasures
That empty me, then fill me back up with empty
