written and performed by Christopher Green

OK. So this is a first. I’ve never filmed a demo of a Tina C. song before. But I’ve been writing a bunch of Tina songs this week for her new Radio 4 project about the Commonwealth. Seems funny to be singing as Tina but as myself, but I like the song and thought I’d share it.

It’s Tina C. inspirational power ballad to sing at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in July. The full title is Why Breathe When You Could Succeed. It’s about pushing yourself to the max. As always with Tina the song questions whether capitalism has infected every part of our lives. The laudable desire to push yourself to your limit is very easily mistaken for the greedy, restless, unsatisfied hunger for more more more.

You’ll be hearing the fully produced version with strings, backing vocals and properly executed multiple key changes soon.

Lyrics:
Why Breathe When You Could Succeed

Hey check that sound
The in and the out
It ain’t real loud
Hear what I’m talking about
Everybody gotta breathe
It’s a basic human need
But I firmly do believe
You gotta aim higher, follow my lead

Why breathe when you could succeed
Why exist when you could exceed
Why run when you could fly
If not why not lay down and die

Why dive when you could launch
Why eat when you could gorge
Why fly when you could soar
Why sing when you can roar

Why smile when you could laugh
Why a glass not a carafe
Why be good and not the best
Why be the juice and not the zest

Why bleed when you could have gore
Why stop here when there’s always more
Why take enough to fulfill your need
Why live if you ignore your greed
Why breathe when you could succeed

Succeed – follow my lead
I’m a winner you can be too
Just change and stop being you

Why live less when there’s success
Why a pussy not a lioness
Why the earth not the universe
Then you’ll be really big indeed
Why breathe when you can succeed
