Alternative title 20:20 Vision

The long title is from a Joan Rivers line from a live album I had when I was about 12. 90% of this album is locked away in my brain and comes out at odd moments.

This is a true story of my train ride home yesterday when I was shockingly willing to leave everything behind to help someone who looked a little under-nurtured by life. The song is a fantasy from this starting point. This is for anyone who has these real flights of fancy which come and go with considerable intensity. I like the way the song asks the question, who is the real lonely person? Who really needs looking after?

I’m Suing Sinatra For The Five Years I Would Have Lived With Him If He Had Asked Me

I watch him read the paper on the 20:20
And I wonder does he live near me
And is his house waiting and empty
And what will he find to eat

Then the answer bites me like an insect sting
I’ll get off the train with him and be his everything

I need nothing of my life
He needs a husband or a wife
I’m doing nothing that can’t wait
We’ll set up home by 20:48

I’ll make his life perfect, it’s a public service
One absolutely happy fella, instead of the sunken hollow shell of a man

I’ll look after him, iron his shirt
So his frayed loneliness isn’t for all to see, like it is now on the 20:20
He looks up at me, I smile
He looks away
I think
If I’m his everything, why is he wearing a ring?

I read the paper on the 20:20
And wonder what I’ll find to eat
