Having struggled with last week’s song I sat down and wrote this song very quickly. But then I’ve waited probably my whole life to write it.
Having been steeped in religious music and imagery growing up, it has taken until now to see that religion works for me if I take it as an extended metaphor for finding the best part of yourself inside you. The Kyrie Eleison – Lord Have Mercy – makes sense to me in this way. A plea from one part of yourself to have compassion and to go easy on the rest of you.
This needs orchestra and full choir obviously so try to use your imagination……
Mercy
So bright, So sharp
I look up and lose my heavy heart
So clear, So much sky
So much space, I lift up my face
To the light, So bright
So sharp, I look up and lose my heavy heart
A hymn of praise I sing today
But not to any god
These ancient chord worship the light
Name it, call it right
Kyrie eleison
I sing to the god that is me
I sing as the light gives me release
Kyrie eleison
Sometime I grant salvation
At times apostacy, overwhelmes me,
I struggle to believe, In redemption, in me
Kyrie eleison
I sing and I set myself free. I sing to the god that is me
I haven’t seen the light for days now it seems
But it was always there waiting for me to see
I don’t believe in angels but I believe in looking up
The wisdom was there all this time waiting for me to see
